BYU Scholarships, Tuition and Acceptance Rate

Students can take advantage of the BYU Scholarships. The Brigham Young University offers a series of scholarships to Freshmen, former students, transfer students, international students and so on. Currently, over one-fourth of students at BYU are on scholarships. The scholarships offered by the university are strictly based on merit and academic performance of the applicant. This article will cover some of the essential scholarships provided by the university.

BYU Idaho Scholarships

Brigham Young University (BYU) is a private research university located in Provo, Utah, and owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). To make education affordable to students, a series of scholarships are offered to offset the cost of tuition. Scholarship applicants are expected to complete 2020-21 FAFSA by January 20, 2020, to be considered for a scholarship for the 2020/21 session.

Freshmen Scholarship at BYU

Prospective new freshmen in BYU are eligible to apply for undergraduate scholarships beginning with the term/semester they are admitted. All prospective students must complete a scholarship application by the appropriate deadline in order to be considered.

Freshman scholarships are determined based on the student’s unweighted high school GPA and the ACT/SAT.

Some scholarships available for Freshmen are:

Russell M. Nelson Scholarship – applicants are required to complete an essay to be considered for this scholarship. The scholarship board will also review the academic performance of the applicant before awarding scholarship.

National Merit Scholarship – National Merit finalist, is qualified for a full rounded scholarship in the university which will pay tuition for eight semesters.

Sterling Scholarship Competition – this scholarship is awarded strictly on the outstanding academic achievement of high school seniors in the state of Utah. The scholarship is by nomination; thus, the high school will nominate a candidate that will compete in various category. From the nominees, they select a semi-finalist who will then move on to the Regional Level to compete.

The five regions are Wasatch Front, Northeast Utah, Central Utah, Southwest Utah, and Southeast Utah.

If a student is a winner in his/her category on the Regional (final) Level, BYU offers them a full LDS tuition scholarship for two semesters.

Spring Summer Term Scholarships BYU

The Financial Aid Office awards scholarship to students for spring and summer terms. The scholarship will cover tuition cost for spring and summer term. Scholarship can also be full or half tuition depending on the scholarship awarded. Funds remaining from the scholarship can be applied towards Summer term tuition.

The scholarship is only available to undergraduates and cannot be deferred to another semester. The scholarship is based on Latter-day Saint tuition rates.

BYU Multicultural Scholarships

Some off-campus scholarships are available for diverse students. The Multicultural Student Services Office is usually available to assist you students in locating additional scholarship opportunities.

BYU Idaho Academic Scholarships

Academic scholarship is available for New Freshmen, Former students and international students. Students are required to submit the scholarship application by the appropriate deadline.

New freshman entering BYU beginning spring term, summer term, or fall semester must submit the scholarship application by the December 15 scholarship deadline.

Former students entering BYU beginning spring, summer, or fall must submit the scholarship application by the December 15 scholarship deadline.

New or former students beginning their studies winter semester must submit the scholarship application by August 1.

What GPA Do You Need to Get A Full Scholarship?

Most scholarships in BYU scholarships are usually awarded on merit. Former students must complete a minimum of 12.0 credits of regular BYU coursework to be eligible for any BYU Scholarships. Currently, GPA cutoffs for academic scholarships has been discontinued by BYU.  However, in practice to be considered for a BYU scholarship, both the cumulative and BYU GPA must be at least 3.0 by the end of the fall semester.

How to Apply for Scholarships at BYU

Students need to apply for financial aid to be eligible for scholarships. BYU offers financial aid from various federal, state, and university programs in the form of grants, scholarships, and loans. The distribution of scholarship is based on the assessment of the student’s and family’s financial need, and the academic performance of the student. Athletic awards are also offered to students.

BYU uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and students applying for federal financial aid must complete the FAFSA form

Eligibility Requirements for BYU Scholarships

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents or eligible non-citizens. In addition, students must maintain satisfactory academic progress to have federal financial aid disbursed to them.

Returning students who have a baccalaureate degree and are returning to receive a teaching certificate may also apply for scholarships if they have a cumulative 2.0 GPA and are admitted to the teacher licensure program.

Brigham Young University offers scholarships to select students who have demonstrated a serious and diligent commitment to spiritual preparation and academic excellence as an investment in their education.

The majority of BYU scholarships are awarded to students based on academic merit.  Applicants are thus required to have good grades.

BYU scholarships are not renewable, and most are awarded for two semesters only.

Applicants must also demonstrate financial need and be willing to replenish the scholarship fund at a later date.

BYU Idaho Application Deadline

Undergraduate students wanting to be considered for need-based scholarships need to complete the 2021-22 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and send it to BYU by January 20, 2021.

BYU Tuition

Lower tuition is given to members of Latter-Day Saint, for 12.0 credit hours, Latter-Day Saint Tuition pay $2,895 while Non-Latter-Day Saints members pay $5,790 for 12 credit hours.

BYU students can monitor their academic progress through the BYU Canvas. Students are required to log in with their username and unique password.

Brigham Young University Acceptance Rate

The overall acceptance rate for Brigham Young University-Provo was reported as 49.4% in Fall 2013 with over 11,400 applications submitted to BYU. Both in-state and out of state applicants are included in these figures.

BYU Idaho Admissions

The BYU-Idaho Admissions Office is still taking applications for Spring and Fall 2020. But due to the pandemic, it will be a virtual class. High school graduates are expected to submit their Cumulative unweighted high school grade point average and ACT or SAT scores. BYU also accepts international students; however, international students will have to pass the English Proficiency Test to be admitted.

The BYU Kennedy Center is the International Study Programs. The Kennedy Center hosts six interdisciplinary undergraduate majors: International Relations, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Asian Studies, European Studies, Latin American Studies, and the Middle East/Arabic Studies.
