The costs of treating diabetes and its complications can be financially draining to students add to the costs of paying for college. Some diabetic students may find it financially impossible to attend college; hence there thousand of Diabetes Scholarships persons living with diabetes can apply for.

Type 1 Diabetes Scholarships

Diabetes Scholars Scholarship

Diabetes scholars offer general scholarships open to high school seniors headed to college/university in 2020 living with Type 1 diabetes.

Eligibility/Requirements:

Applicants must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

High School Seniors with Type 1 diabetes seeking higher education at an accredited four-year university, college, technical or trade school.

Recipients are selected based on activities, grades, volunteering, advocacy, leadership, essays and recommendations from both a physician/CDE treating them as well as from a high school teacher/counsellor.

Diabetes Incorporated Scholarship

The scholarship is open to High school senior students who plan to continue their education beyond high school or students who are currently continuing their education beyond the high school level.

Applicants must either have diabetes or have an immediate family member who has diabetes, and a family member must be a current Diabetes, Incorporated member.

Each recipient of the scholarship will receive at least one $1,000, which will be split between the Spring and Fall semesters and will be given directly to the institution to defray the costs of higher education.

The John A. Ulis – Run 2 End T1D Scholarship

The scholarship is open to students living with Type 1 Diabetes and planning on attending a 4-year college or Community College. Applicants must be a graduating senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applicants are expected to submit the following:

Completed application

Completed Essay Questions

One copy of your transcript (unofficial is okay)

Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, coach or non-family member

Proof of T1D; Dr’s note, pic of insulin prescription

$1,000 is awarded to recipients of the scholarship, and applicants are expected to submit their application to lisau13@yahoo.com before August 14, 2020.

LimeConnect Pathways Scholarship

The scholarship is open to current high school seniors in the U.S. or Canada graduating in the Spring or Summer of 2019. Applicants must be intending to be enrolled full time in that 4-year university or college in Fall 2019. To apply for the scholarship, applicants will have to log into The Lime Network , fill the application form and attach their Resume/CV. Applicants will also have to answer one essay question related to living successfully with a disability. $1,000 is awarded to lucky recipients of the scholarship.

PhentermineClinics Health Scholarship

To be eligible for the PhentermineClinics Health Scholarship, applicants will have to be currently enrolled in a college, university, high school or trade school. $1000 is awarded to lucky recipients of the scholarship.

AAHD Frederick J. Krause Scholarship on Health and Disability

American Association of Diabetes Educators

Jay Cutler Athletic Scholarship: awarded to a student that will be an incoming freshman with type 1 diabetes and will be playing a competitive sport in college.

Novo Nordisk Scholarship: awarded to students that will be an incoming freshman with type 1 diabetes

The Lilly Diabetes Tomorrow’s Leaders Scholarship – eleven scholarships at $5,000 each, five scholarships at $4,000 each and five scholarships at $3,000 each will be awarded to students that will be an incoming freshman with type 1 diabetes.

Diabetes Financial Assistance

A person living with diabetes may qualify for disability benefits. For instance, Canada provides a monthly allowance to Canadians (under 65 years of age) who have become unable to work because of a disability. To be eligible for the allowance, your disability must be “severe” and “prolonged”.

College Diabetes Network

CDN was founded in 2009 by a college student with T1D who felt isolated and struggled to manage her diabetes.  The College Diabetes Network website provides a comprehensive list of diabetes Scholarships.

Juvenille Diabetes Association

The Juvenile Diabetes Association is a charitable organization with the mission to support research to find a cure for diabetes. Juvenile diabetes is a condition that develops when the body’s immune system begins attacking and destroying certain cells in the pancreas. The goal of JDRF research is to improve the lives of all people affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D.

Diabetes Scholars Foundation

The Diabetes Scholars Foundation was established in 2004 to empower people living with Type 1 diabetes through education, awarding need-based scholarships for over 3,000 people to attend diabetes education conferences. Currently, over $1.6 million in college scholarships has been awarded to students with Type 1 diabetes.

College Scholarships for Diabetics

Many institutions of higher learning distribute campus-specific scholarships specifically to diabetic students who are enrolled at their schools. Arizona State University (ASU) for example, students with juvenile diabetes are eligible to apply for the Julie Sargent Memorial Scholarship.

University of Florida Diabetes Center of Excellence administers the Diabetes Scholars Program on campus annually.

Michigan Grants for Diabetes Programs

Michigan Programs Diabetes Self-Management Education was created to increase availability and improve the quality of diabetes self-management education, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Certification Program has developed review criteria based on national standards. The Certification Program staff provide consultation services related to the standards and certification process.
